APPL Foundation Launches the Resilient Community Project
The Resilient Community Project is an initiative launched by Amalgamated Plantations Pvt. Ltd. Foundation in collaboration with Baptist Church Hospital, at Hattigor and Majuli Tea Estates in Darrang district of Assam. It was set up with the intent to create a healthy, safe and protective society through community awareness campaigns on healthcare and sanitation, domestic violence against women, human trafficking, the need for child protection and the import of child and adult education. A review meeting held on 3 February, 2015 at the Child Care Centre in Hattigor Tea Estate saw the participation of estate management, community health volunteers and other members of the local communities. At the meeting, a monitoring mechanism was put in place and representatives were selected to facilitate the prioritization of primary education, especially among ‘drop-outs’ while women candidates were also identified for the enrolment in the adult literacy programme. Further, a Child Protection Committee (CPC) was formed for Hattigor Tea Estate and one on similar lines is to follow at Majuli Tea Estate, which will liaise with local level organizations such as the Village Child Protection Committees, All Tea Tribe Students’ Association (ATTSA) and All Adivasi Students’ Association (AASA) to ensure a secure environment for the children of the community to thrive. Planning for the upcoming Women’s Day celebrations formed a core theme at the meeting as well. Programmes to generate awareness on domestic violence and on-site training for CPC members and paramedical staff have been scheduled for the upcoming months.
